Songs of the 1848 Revolution (AHRC–DFG-Project)



The editorial project 'Songs of the 1848 Revolution and the History of their Reception in Germany' is dedicated to the research of those songs which have particularly shaped cultural memory and images of history. Looking at both textual and musical developments the research deals with songs of well-known as well as anonymous poets. These together form an enduring core in the area of German political song.

The aim
of this research project is in the first instance to produce a historical critical edition of the basic corpus of this song repertoire.

The research project is a German-British collaboration between

  • Dr. David Robb (Queen's University Belfast) and
  • Dr. Eckhard John (German Folksong Archive).

The project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).

Duration: 3 years (February 2009 – January 2012).
