D. Roll On The Blue Funnel

(Nazistische Propaganda 1943)

Text: Norman Baillie-Stewart
Musik: Fred Raymond (1900–1954)

Roll On The Blue Funnel
(Roll On The Big Boat)

1.A sentry alone in the night
Was thinking about his sad plight
Thought of Blighty and his fate
To be standing round so late
He longed for the wings of a dove
To fly to the arms of his love
And his heart beneath his soldier's coat
Beats faster at thought of the boat.

Roll on the Blue Funnel
Roll on the big boat
I'm longing for Blighty
To hang up my coat
Roll on that blue smokestack [?] [1]
Roll on that big ship
It's waiting for Blighty
That gives me the pip.

2.The sentry was down on his luck
It's true, he had plenty of pluck
But his home was far away
And he'd spent his soldier's pay
He thought of his missus and beer
And thought every day of being there,
Though he wasn't going to lose his grip
He wanted to get on the ship.
Roll on the Blue Funnel [...]

3. The sentry was certainly brave
He feared neither colonel nor grave
But he thought of civvy life
At home with his sweet young wife
He thought of his little son Bob
And worried about his old job
And he thought how very nice it would be
A-rolling back home on the sea.

Roll on the Blue Funnel [...]

[1] Vom akustischen Eindruck eher: "smoke-pit", was jedoch vom Sinn her zweifelhaft ist.
